The History of Tennis

Tennis is a very old sport starting in the mid 1800s. Tennis is played in games and sets. In each game the points are scored 0, 15, 30, 40 and the game winning point. If the score is 40-40 you have to win by 2 clear points. Did you know that the exact origins of the 15, 30, 40 scoring system supposedly came about because they were based on a clock face at one end of the court. It was originally 15, 30, 45 but 45 was shortened to 40, as 45 took too long to say.

A set is decided by the first player to 6 games. if the score reaches 6-6 in most cases a tiebreak decides the set. The first to 7 points to wins the tiebreak. The player must win by at least 2 points, so a tiebreak will continue until that happens.

History of tennis

Most matches are played as the best of three sets, in Grand Slams it’s the best of five. In most Grand Slams the final set cannot be decided by a tiebreak so one player has to win by 2 clear games. In fact, in 2010 John Isner and Nicolas Mahut played a final set to 70-68 at Wimbledon.

Tennis tournaments are played on several different types of surfaces: hard court, indoor hard court, clay and grass. The different courts have different characteristics, especially when it comes to the speed of the game. Grass is the fastest and clay the slowest with hard court in between. Some players have become specialists on one type of court, there are many players that really are clay court experts but have a hard time handling the faster court types where the game is played differently.

There are four big tournaments (Grand Slams) in a year: the Australian Open in January, the French Open in May, Wimbledon in June and the US Open in September. Every tennis player’s dream is to win a Golden Grand Slam, to win all Grand Slams in a single calendar year. It’s very, very rare.

The world tennis season starts in January and ends in November. The Men’s tour is called the ATP tour and finishes with a ATP World Tour final where the 8 best singles and doubles players compete. The women’s tour is called the WTA Tour with the similar finals held at the end of October.

The Davis Cup is an annual international team event between men's national teams. Countries from all around the world competing in a knock-out format. The final is usually played in October and the winners can call them self the World Champions of tennis. The United States won the first ever title and have also won most titles in history (32). In 2015 Andy Murray lead Great Britain to its first Davis Cup win in 79 years!

What you didn’t know about tennis...

Why are tennis balls yellow?

Actually, they used to be white. Today, they’re “fluorescent yellow” or “optic yellow” because of television. In 1972, the International Tennis Federation switched to yellow balls, which they claimed were easier to see on TV. Meanwhile Wimbledon continued to use the traditional white ball, but eventually adopted yellow balls in 1986.

Why are tennis balls yellow. Why are tennis balls fuzzy?

If you’re wondering why they didn’t choose a pink or orange ball, there’s no good answer—they claim their study showed optic yellow was the most visible, even against a tennis court’s lightly-colored ground.

Why are tennis balls fuzzy?

Fuzz on a tennis ball isn’t for fun. It’s functional. Tennis balls are made of bouncy rubber, and the felt covering helps make them softer, slowing their speed in the air, and regulates their bounce. Just as importantly, it gives the tennis ball a lot of surface for spin, which is a key part of the game. In tandem, these help make tennis easier to play than if you just hit around a handball.

What is the longest tennis match?

The John Isner–Nicolas Mahut match at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships mentioned above holds the record for the world’s longest ever tennis match. The match lasted for 11 hours and 5 minutes. How did the players maintain their energy? It is said three boxes of pizza and mashed potatoes were delivered to Isner during the marathon!
